The Mary A. Crocker Trust was established in 1889 by the four children of Mary Crocker, making it the oldest family foundation west of the Mississippi. Five family members now serve as Trustees. The Trust distributes 5% of its asset value, or approximately $500,000 a year, to charitable organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. The average grant size ranges from $10,000 to $25,000. The policy of the Trust is not to give continuing support.

The Trust is primarily interested in Bay Area* programs in the areas listed below. The Board wishes to remain flexible but does not encourage proposals outside these program areas.

Grantmaking meetings are held twice a year in the Spring and Fall. Deadlines for Letters of Intent for these meetings are the end of January and the end of August.

Education

The Trust is especially interested in pre-collegiate projects that:

  • Encourage academic excellence
  • Aid schools in meeting the special demands facing the Bay Area
  • Provide alternative approaches to traditional education

Environment

The Trust seeks to fund educational and advocacy projects that promote solutions to environmental problems and boost awareness and participation. The Trust has special interest in these areas:

  • Sustainable agriculture and forestry
  • Waste management and recycling
  • Water quality
  • Land use management

*The Bay Area is defined as these nine counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Sonoma, Solano and Napa.
